We stayed on Madeira for a week and this was the best authentic experience that we had. The food here is an excellent example of Madeiran cuisine and the mountain lodge atmosphere is rustic and relaxing. The service was also excellent. I highly recommend getting the sweet potato, they were baked whole then fried with the skin on, sliced, and drizzled with some dark honey. The espetada here was perfect and so was the black pork. We got to spend some time with a chef in Funchal and when we mentioned Abrigo do Pastor he declared it the best restaurant on Madeira and we agree. Make sure to make a reservation! A traditional mountain restaurant, popular with locals and where grilled meat is the star of the show. The decor transports you to a cozy mountain lodge, and the service is impeccable. Portions are very generous. We had bread, lamb stew, grilled vegetables, and tomato soup. An absolute must if you’re in the area—just make sure you have a car to get there (there’s plenty of parking). If you get the chance to go, don’t hesitate, even if the road is full of twists and turns. the food is great and the service is even better. you should come here for the traditional meat on a skewer, and definitely go for their desserts (we shared the selection of 5 desserts between 3 people and loved them all, this was also enough for us). I also recommend the ‘Madeira’ soup. overall 10/10 experience

Tips if you’re visiting for the first time: When you’re handed the main menu, ask for the local menu — it has more traditional dishes and hidden gems! In the evening, it’s best to reserve a table. And if you’re a meat lover, don’t miss the dish with fries and grilled meat (like in the photo). Go for the large portion — it’s huge! We shared it between three people and everyone was full. Two hungry guys could easily split it too. Now for the review: This place is outstanding! The meat? 100/100. Octopus? 100/100. Service and atmosphere? Also 100/100. Warm, welcoming staff, relaxed vibe, and food that’s absolutely unforgettable. One of our favorite meals in Madeira — highly, highly recommended!

Very nice place. Easy to get a table. The beef espanada skewer thing was amazing. So tasty. The suckling pig was OK but wouldn't order it again. So good. I went back again another day for a 5km walk and coffee & dessert. Really good apple pie.
